The King Valley is located at the foothills of the Alpine National Park in Victoria’s high country, surrounded by mountains, rivers and rolling vineyards. It is one of the highest altitude grape growing regions in Australia and also has one of the greatest concentrations of varieties of any wine region in Australia. Its bias towards Italian varieties is shaped by its strong Italian heritage, however the region also produces premium traditional cool climate wines. It has a continental climate, with warm days and cool night and the variance in elevation across the region is the reason it can produce such a large variety of wine styles. The King Valley is the first region to produce an Australian-made premium Prosecco and is also well-known for other Italian wines, including Nebbiolo, Sangiovese and Pinot Grigio to name a few. Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon are also widely planted in the region.
