This is a tribute wine. First made for a family member who had a penchant for big robust styled wines, think Barossa Shiraz and Rutherglen Durif. He was a wise man and helped me over the years with gentle words of encouragement and life advice always done with a laugh and over a bottle of fine red!
Over the years I converted him to the joys of fresh, vibrant medium bodied wines.
Of all the wines I make this is the most robust and delicious! It is picked as ripe as I feel is necessary with the aim to make a rich, but balanced wine
It is grown on the Heathcote ridge vineyard where the have planted the vine rows on an east- west orientation. North south is traditional in Oz, but with global warming and increasing temperatures the grapes get too much sunshine and heat on the exposed grapes. With east west the canopy is able to better protect the grapes from the heat and sun a little more and the ripening process is slowed down, giving better flavour development.
It is picked, fermented in small batches and aged in 225 and 300 L French oak barrels for 11 months with about 30% of this been New oak.
This is deliciously bright, but underlying all the fireworks, there is a wine of power and finesse. It has beautiful fruit weight and enough dark and brooding characters to give it some guts and drive fine tannins and beautiful acidity give the wine a long future in the cellar if you are one of these strange people who likes to cellar wine!! ‘Drink it I say, just drink it’.
Livewire is the project of career winemaker Anthony Brain. The wines are stylish expressions of different vineyards from mainly Geelong, but also vineyards in Heathcote and Western Victoria.

Livewire Presents – these are wines to push boundaries. Adventurous, fun and sometimes a little leftfield in style or origin. These are wines that come and go. Small scale, high interest factor, quality vino to explore. Stay tuned as these will come and go quickly.
Wine wankery is not allowed. Wine is made for drinking and enjoying. Cellaring and pontificating over wines is for 70 + old men with big red noses! Wine is fun.

Firstly a Chef before I became a winemaker! My love of food, flavor, and texture led me to wine. I have worked for some of the biggest wine companies in Australia and also for small boutique operations. Over 20 years in wine I have completed vintages in Geelong, Margaret River, the Hunter, King and Yarra Valley’s. I love the vineyard and I am a massive believer in quality of sites and the way they are farmed is vitally important.
In the winery I throw my science degree and corporate hat out the window and make wines on instinct. I believe in making wines in accordance to what the growing season has thrown at us. My winemaking is based on a less is more approach, where having the courage to do nothing to my wines is the aim. The more you tinker with them, the more the soul of the wine disappears. I consider my approach to winemaking to be hands off, however if I need to intervene on a wine that might need a little guidance I will consider doing this.
Most importantly my wines must be fresh, complex and elegant. The biggest key is balance and they must also have that wondrous appeal to make you want to go back for another bottle!
