Karrawatta Sophie's Hill Pinot Grigio 2018

Quick Overview

Our Pinot Grigio is planted at the highest point in the vineyard, at an altitude of approximately 520 metres above sea level, where it enjoys cool nights and shade from the afternoon sun – ideal for premium Grigio production. Primary characters of pear, grapefruit, green apple and chamomile combine with refreshing acidity and great length on the palate.

TASTING NOTES

Our Pinot Grigio is planted in one of the highest altitude vineyards in the Adelaide Hills. We aim to follow the leaner, drier Italian model of Pinot Grigio to make a wine that is delicate, lifted and versatile. The juice is barrel-fermented in old French barriques and goes through partial malo-lactic fermentation which has resulted in a complex flavour profile and soft, generous mouthfeel.

"Our primary focus lies within the vineyard with minimal intervention in the winery. This approach allows our wines to reflect their sense of place and our philosophy on management which involves growing the best varieties suited to each region, low cropping levels, sensitive farming and conversion of our vineyards to organically farmed."

At a local South Australian pub, a coin was flipped and it landed on tails, meaning my great great great grandfather, Joseph Gilbert, lost the bet and had to change his property name from ‘Karrawatta’ to ‘Pewsey Vale’. Joseph Gilbert made his first wine in 1847. Since then, the Gilbert family has continued to produce wine grapes and I am excited to reignite Karrawatta with my single vineyard, small batch wines.

Karrawatta has evolved from a passion and desire to make our own wines from vineyards that we own and manage. Our primary focus lies within the vineyard with minimal intervention in the winery. This approach allows our wines to reflect their sense of place and our philosophy on management which involves growing the best varieties suited to each region, low cropping levels, sensitive farming and conversion of our vineyards to organically farmed.

Our wines are produced from three contrasting and highly sought after vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. All vines are detail hand-pruned and the fruit selectively picked to nurture the wines from vineyard to glass. All our wines reflect our sense of style, exhibiting intense flavours, elegance, complexity and harmony.

We are honourned to be recognized by James Halliday AM as a five star winery. The five star category acknowledges "outstanding wineries producing wines of a very high quality".

SOPHIE'S HILL VINEYARD, ADELAIDE HILLS:

Our newly renovated cellar door is located at Sophie's hill vineyard just 30 min drive from Adelaide CBD and only 15 mins from Hahndorf. Established in 1996, Sophie's Hill vineyard in Meadows is one of the highest altitude vineyards in the Adelaide Hills, ranging from 450 to 520m above sea level. Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and Shiraz are planted to suit the site's topography and ensure premium wine production; vibrancy and fruit intensity shine with low yields and vine growth in natural balances. Sophie's Hill is named after Mark's daughter Sophie, who loves catching yabbies and having bonfires on the farm.

CHRISTO'S PADDOCK VINEYARD, LANGHORNE CREEK:

Christo's paddock vineyard is located on premium dirt, just off the Angas River in Langhorne Creek. The vines were planted in 1989 into free draining thick brown loamy sand over a red brown sandy clay loam, which are calcareous at depth, and recieve minimal irrigation. Fruit from our vineyard is highly sought after, and we select a small proportion for our premium Shiraz, Cabernet and Malbec. Christo's Paddock is named after Mark's son Christo, who loves tractors and all things on wheels.

ACE OF TRUMPS VINEYARD, MCLAREN VALE:

This vineyard was planted in 2001 after extensive development, planning and site preparations, includign detailed soil mapping to allow optimal varietal and clone selection, and vineyard layout. Nine hectares are planted with Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, in Seaview, a sub-region of McLaren Vale. The vineyard is mostly south-facing, which helps to keep the microclaimte relatively mild in summer and the fruit and vines protected from summer's hot northerly winds. The vineyard is in outstanding condition, with remarkable uniformity across the property resulting in considently low yields of icon quality fruits. 'Ace of Trumps' is a tribute to our family's race horse, which won the Adelaide Cup in 1874.

CELLAR DOOR

Our cellar door is housed in a converted dairy, nestled in the Adelaide Hills vineyard between old vines and classic Australian bush. Guests can enjoy tailored wine tastings, guided vineyard walks or simply to relax with a glass of wine.

The cellar door is open 7 days a week from 11am until 4pm. We are closed on Good Friday, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

You can find the cellar door in our Sophie’s Hill Adelaide Hills vineyard, at 164 Greenhills Road, Meadows.
